The passion flower is a climbing plant that can grow up to 10 meters long. Common names for the passion flower are maypop, apricot vine, passion fruit, water lemon. The plant has berries called passion fruit, some of which are edible. The story of the passion flower began when it was discovered by Spanish explorers in Peru in the 16th century. In 1569, a Spanish doctor named Monardes documented its use and took it with him when he returned to the Old World. Passion flower tea became popular there because of its calming properties. The benefits of passion flower didn't stop there, the Native Americans also used passion flower for its calming properties.
This natural calming effect has a lot to do with the active group of chemicals that passionflower contains, known as glycosides and flavonoids. Scientists have found that these natural chemicals only produce the calming effect in combination.
